Problem.
A colleague of mine FORCED me to create a piece visualizing my struggles and experiences with being a bilingual speaker and immigrant in America for the "Power of Language" event held by LingoMatch, a group within the University of Michigan.
Process.
While exploring concepts, I realized a huge part of my relationship with language is my name. Too often to count, people try to "correct" the pronunciation of my name to a Western lehja when I introduce myself. My piece is an interactive piece in which the audience is able to complete my name, with a guide to visualize what happens within these verbal interactions. See if their eyes fail like their ears.
I used a birch wood square, 24x24 inches, that I nailed a grid into. I then took gold string and wrapped part of my name in square kufic.
I left the name unfinished for the audience to complete.
